Crib League Rules
Rule 1:
There will be an Annual General Meeting held in October each year (earlier by agreement).
Rule 2:
Games to be played on MONDAY nights to commence no later than 8.30 pm and by arrangement may start earlier.
Rule 3:
Any team not making contact by 9.00 pm will forfeit the match. (See Rule 8c).
Rule 4:
Entry fees must accompany the team application form to ensure entry to the league. The fee is reviewed and set by the committee each season.
a:
Any team that is expelled or withdraws after the publication of fixtures will not be eligible for a refund of entry fees.
b:
Any team not fulfilling the season's fixtures or is expelled before the half-way stage all points will be void; after the half-way stage the second half points will be void and the first-half points remain in this instance.
c:
Any team withdrawing without giving the committee a justifiable reason will only be re-admitted to the league in subsequent seasons at the committee's discretion.
Rule 6:
Any number of players may play and NO player will be registered.
Rule 7:
Players can only play for one pub or club, but may play for any team from that pub or club. However, no player can play for more than one team in the knockout.
Rule 8:
Cancellations
Except in cases of MEDICAL EMERGENCY or SEVERE WEATHER CONDITIONS matches must be cancelled no less than 24 hours before the scheduled playing date. Cancellations should be notified to the league secretary by telephone, in writing (or email to the Assistant Secretary) by the offending team - failure to do so may result in TWO points being deducted from the offending team.
a:
All cancelled games must be played within 21 days of the original playing date. The non-offending team should give three alternative days, two of which may be in the same week. If a mutually convenient date cannot be agreed the offending team is deducted 4 points and the offended team awarded 8 points.
b:
If the offended team does not give three alternative dates within 72 hours then this will be referred to the committee for a decision regarding the points.
c:
Non arrival of a team will result in an automatic 8 points being awarded to the offended team and 4 points deducted from the offending team.
d:
All games to be played before the last scheduled match date on the fixture list (exluding Pairs and Team Knockout Quarter and Semi-finals and Finals Night matches). If either of the last two games on the fixture list is cancelled due to unusual circumstances, the committee will decide if and when/where the match is to be played or points awarded.
Rule 9:
Team sheets should include all players initials and surname in CAPITAL LETTERS. There will only be ONE warning per team for failing to abide by this rule.
Rule 10:
A league match will consist of twelve tables. No two players will play together more than once in any one match.
Rule 11:
All results to be RECEIVED by the league secretary within FIVE days of the playing date. All late results may result in THREE points being deducted; any non-arrival of a result card within fourteen days of the playing date may result in FIVE points being deducted. Warnings may be given. The HOME CAPTAIN will be responsible for sending the result card to the secretary.
Rule 12:
The HOME team will fill in each result before handing the sheet to the AWAY captain for checking and signing. The away team must not sign the result card until it is fully completed.
Rule 13:
If at the end of play there is an unresolved dispute which cannot be amicably resolved by both team captains, and which can affect the overall result, both versions of the dispute must be submitted, in writing, to the league secretary within seven days of the match for the committee’s attention.
Rule 14:
14. In the event of a points tie for 1st, 2nd, 3rd places in the league sections, places will be decided by points, games won and drawn. Play offs will only be held where points, games won, games drawn are equal.
Rule 15:
Play-offs and presentations will be held on a date specified by the committee.
Rule 16:
Any team not represented at Finals Night will forfeit any prize money.
Rule 17:
Trophies or Cups won must be returned to the league commitee on demend at least SIX WEEKS before finals night. Trophies are the responsibility of the last team/pair to have signed for the trophy or cup and this team/pair will be required to meet the costs of any replacement or making good any damage.
Rule 18:
Entry into the League, Team and Pairs Knockouts signifies acceptance of the rules.
Rule 19:
Complaints must be made in writing to the committee (either in writing/email to the secretary/assistant secretary) within five days of the event. The committee will convene (within one week) and if necessary call representatives of the team[s] concerned to be present. The committee's decision is final.
Playing Rules
Rule 20:
FIVE cards shall be dealt to each player, ONE of which must be put into the box hand. Scoring boards should be straight boards with 120 holes for each team arranged in two lines with a single hole at either end to make a total of 121 holes.
Rule 21:
21. The box hand for all league, team and pairs knockouts shall commence with one of the away team players and then worked alternately in a clockwise direction on the remaining sets of tables. A cut should be made only in the event of a draw to establish the last box.
a:
When cutting to establish who has the box all picture cards (King, Queen, Jack) shall have a face value of 10 - if a King and Jack are cut then this will be determined as being equal and a further cut must be made. Ace is always the lowest card. Lowest cut value is winner.
b:
Colours or odds/evens are not acceptable as a valid cut during a match.
c:
A cut is determined as more than four cards taken and more than four cards left in the pack.
Rule 22:
A total of 121 points shall constitute a game. This does not have to be scored exactly (ie a player requiring SIX points and holding TEN points wins the game).
Rule 23:
The player whose turn it is for the box shall deal the cards for that hand. The player who previously held the box cutting the cards for the dealer. The player following the dealer shall cut the cards for the “turn up” card, after each player has discarded one card into the box.
Rule 24:
If a JACK is turned up for the turn up card, the dealer's team will receive two points, but if only 2 points are needed to win the game then this will NOT be counted.
Rule 25:
If a Jack in a player's hand is the same suit as the “turn up” card then one point is scored (this applies to hand and box).
Rule 26:
After all cards are played the player to the left of the player holding the box will count up the points in his/her hand first and then each player in turn will count up his/her points in a clockwise direction.
Rule 27:
Each player shall lay their cards face upwards on the table to count the points, which may be corrected by a partner or the opposition.
Rule 28:
A flush will constitute FOUR or FIVE cards in the same suit in the player's hand (including the turn up card) this must be all FIVE cards in the box.
Rule 29:
Broken or back runs will be allowed, any dispute during the game over a run should be referred to the two team captains.
Rule 30:
TEAM KNOCKOUTS – Entry is automatically included and will consist of TWELVE games, except for the finals which will be NINE or TWELVE games at the commitee's discretion. An additional three tables with no change of pairings (making a total of fifteen) should be played in the event of a 6-6 draw. Normal league rules will apply. THERE WILL BE NO EXTENSION OF THE PLAYING DATE UNLESS AGREED BY THE COMMITTEE.
a:
Only pairs from pubs and clubs in the league may enter – best of FIVE legs. Where there is no fixed playing date the HOME team will make contact giving THREE separate dates (two of which may be in the same week) on or before the contact date. Any disputes to be forwarded to the committee who will set a date and place for the game to be played. If no result or claim both pairs will be eliminated. Winning pair to notify the organiser of the result in writing.
b:
A player may be substituted if unable to play on an arranged date. Only one substitution per pair may be made and this must be advised to the organiser of the competition. Any substitutes MUST NOT have played previously in the competition. If a substitution is made at quarter or semi-final stage then this player must continue to the Final.
c:
Both players must play for the same pub or club.
d:
THERE WILL BE NO EXTENSION OF THE PLAYING DATE UNLESS AGREED BY THE COMMITTEE
e:
Any player knowing that they will not be available to play on designated days for quarter, semi and finals nights must notify the organiser. Substitutes may be nominated in accordance with Rule 31b but if a substitute cannot be found the committee will determine if the match will be forfeited.

PLEASE NOTE THAT BOTH TEAM CAPTAINS AND THE LANDLORD OF THE HOME AND AWAY PUB SHOULD BE CONSULTED FOR APPROVAL IF PLAYERS UNDER THE AGE OF 14 YEARS ARE BEING PLAYED IN A MATCH.
